How to choose a cosmetic dentist

Training:  Would you let your family MD do brain surgery on you?   When choosing a cosmetic dentist, learn how much continuing education the dentist has done.  Many of the cosmetic techniques available today are not taught in dental schools. Dentists must take advanced training to learn and master the many aspects of cosmetic dentistry.

Experience:   Experience does matter.  Some dentists do cosmetics as a sideline and have very limited experience.  When the sign on the door reads "Family & Cosmetic Dentistry" the chances are that the cosmetic aspect of the practice is a small percentage.  Look also at numerous before and after photographs of patients actually treated by the dentist.

Who has smile makeovers?

Who has cosmetic smile makeovers?  We see a diverse group of patients who elect to have their smile improved  - school teachers, models, real estate sales people, retirees, business people and other health professionals.

This is Cathy, an attractive housewife in her early 50s who had a severe bite problem causing bone deterioration and loss of molar teeth.  Her porcelain veneers and all porcelain crowns corrected the bite and resulted in this dazzling smile.

For some patients cosmetic surgery in the form of a cosmetic gum lift can help in the overall result.  Below is Diana, a mid 30s woman who had short teeth from grinding and a "gummy" smile.  Making her teeth slightly longer and raising the gum line a bit gave her a much younger, sexier appearance.

Tetracycline stained teeth can be impossible to bleach, but can be made perfect with porcelain veneer as in the case of Martha in the photos below.

Dr. Carlson has placed thousands of all porcelain restorations - invaluable experience in the field of cosmetics.  He is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry.  Less than 1% of dentists achieve this status.  He is a graduate of numerous courses at the Las Vegas Institute of Advanced Dental Studies including the Advanced Anterior Aesthetic Program and the Masters Program.  He is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and regularly attends the continuing education courses.
